I was going to title this post 'Malaysia' but then realized it wouldn't be fair, a bit like judging the book by its cover as I haven't seen much of the country, mainly Kuala Lumpur and its surroundings. It gave me an idea of the country though..
First of all, it was a world away from Singapore. I don't mean it in a bad way, the difference was simply very noticeable. As soon as we got off the coach(4.5hours from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur with one stop)we could tell our new destination wasn't going to be as 'plush' as the last one.
When we first got to Johor Bahru, we had a few hours to kill so we decided to try some local delicacies. I would encourage anyone stopping at the coach station there to taste the delicious food served at the simple eateries. The choice was amazing, the prices super low and everything tasted great.
Once we arrived in KL, we had to take the train to our hotel. Now, the public transport there is somewhat confusing..Different trains run by different companies, requiring travelers to purchase separate tickets for specific routes. I have to say, we were not impressed with constant train changes, looking for ticket counters and the overall messiness but it wasn't a nightmare.
In the 4 days that we spent in and around KL, we managed to see almost all tourist attractions, from Batu Caves(very dirty and smelly, not really worth the trip) to Masjid Negara mosque(interesting for a non-Muslim but nothing out of the ordinary). My OH and I agreed that we probably would have been better off visiting Malaysia first and then going to Singapore as that way we wouldn't feel so let down..As it was, the highlight of our trip to Malaysia was the unbelievably cleverly done musical fountain show right below the Petronas Towers. It was simply amazing!Every evening at 8pm.
In the end, we decided that next time we will give the Malay islands a try as that will give us a better idea of what Malaysia outside of KL is like.
